What is a first class river in Japan?

In Japan, a “first-class river” (一級河川, ikkyū kakyū) refers to a river that is designated as such by the national government because of its importance to the country’s water resources, transportation, or industrial activities.

The designation of a river as a first-class river is based on its size, water flow, and other factors. Currently, there are 25 rivers in Japan that are designated as first-class rivers, including the Shinano River, the longest river in Japan, the Tone River, which flows through the Kanto region, and the Ishikari River, which is the largest river in Hokkaido.

Designation as a first-class river brings with it certain responsibilities and regulations. The national government is responsible for the management of these rivers and has established laws and regulations to protect them from pollution, ensure their proper use, and promote their sustainable development.

In addition to first-class rivers, there are also second-class and third-class rivers in Japan, which are designated by the prefectural governments based on their regional importance and size.
